Some girls get boyfriends in high school, some get numerous boyfriends, some don't at all, and then there are some, like the main character in our story, who want to... but don't.
Eaven White was one of these girls. While a freshman, she had many views about high school dating that were, well, freshman views. When she entered her senior year she held some of the same views, and most were modified to something that she could accept now. But what surprised her in that year was not that she felt fine holding hands, or that kissing was not as big of a sin as she had once thought, but she wanted to break her cardinal rule. She wanted a boyfriend.
This may not seem to weird for some people, half of the population of the school is dating. But for Eaven, this was a problem. Her entire high school career she had been against steady dating in high school, never once had she agreed with it. When her friends had given in and fallen into the trend of boyfriend/girlfriend, she let them know her opinion on it, time after time. And now she wanted to have a boyfriend. But in her mind, there were three problems:
- Who?
- How?
- Because she had been so adamant about it, everyone knew her for it and if she broke that now, others would follow her example, others that may not be read for that step.
This conflict raged inside of her, day in and day out. Eaven thought about it constantly. Not quite obsessing, yet not letting it rest either. She wanted this more than she had ever wanted a lot of things. Yet this was the one thing she forbid herself to have.
Finally, she decided she would just wait until after graduation, besides, that was the dead line she had set for herself her freshman year.
But that was made extreemly difficult when a new family moved in down the street from her home.
There was nothing scary, abnormal, or even weird about them. They were just a normal family, who happend to have an 18 year old boy. He was very handsome, standing at about 6'2'', he had short dark hair that was styled into a fohawk on the sid of his head where a part would normally be. His eyes were a dark green, almost brown, and his skin was slightly tanned. Nothing out of the ordinary about him.
Eaven's family was outside doing some "quality time" aka yardwork when his moving truck pulled up. They unloaded everything in the truck in less than 3 hours and then it drove away. This kind of thing happened every once in a while, people moved in. That is what happens when you live in a rapidly growing town.
Eaven did not really get to meet him until one night when she was walking home from the bus stop after school.
Eaven stuffed her hands into her pockets to shield them from the bitter cold. There brown hair was tucked into the scarf that covered her neck and her jacket hid her figure. Her purse dangled from her wrist, bouncing off of her knee as she walked. She had just walked off of the bus, and was on her way home, ready to proceed without interruption, when she felt a hand grab her elbow. Shrugging it off she turned and faced a young man whose hair was glistening with the falling snow.
“Excuse me, lady, but you dropped this.” He held up a piece of paper with scribble on every inch.
Eaven gasped.“Oh! Thank you!” she trumpeted.” Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I don’t know what would have happened if I had lost this! Thank you!” She shook his hand fiercely.
He smiled back at her and said a quiet “ you are welcome,” before he let go of her hand.
She smiled again and turned around ready to continue her walk home. As she walked, the man caught up to her.
“Excuse me, Lady, but may I walk you home?” His face looked hopeful when Eaven turned to look at him, she couldn’t’ turn him down.
“ Yeah sure… So….”
“Well, Lady, do you mind that I call you lady?” His emerald eyes turned to gaze at her expression.
She smiled, “I think it is chivalrous and romantic, I don’t mind at all.”
Suddenly his expression grew concerned. “ I am not meaning to come on strong, just trying to make conversation.”
She, once again, smiled to herself, touched at his concern.“ I understand, and I think it is very appropriate seeing as you don’t even know my name.” She wondered if he would ask for her name at all.
“Well I am glad, I just saw that you dropped your paper and wanted to give it to you, I know how frantic I am when I lose something, even if it is small.” He grinned at her, showing his smile was slightly crooked.
“Yes, well that paper has a lot of things on it that would hurt me to lose, I am glad you gave it back. Do you live around here?” They were almost to her house; she was scared she would never see this young gentleman again.
“Yes I do actually, we passed on the way here, the corner house on this street. I just moved in on saturday. I would have gone to school but I am not registered yet and so I would have nothing to do all day if I went.” They had reached her door, and she was loath to part with him so soon after meeting him, but knowing he only lived down the street made the parting easier.
“ Well,” She muttered, twirling her foot on the ground, “This is my house… I guess I will, see you later?”
“Definitely.” She smiled again, and stunned her by making a deep bow. She retaliated by curtsying, pretending to hold a dress out.
“Thank you, young man, for escorting me home.”
He stood up and smiled.“It was my pleasure.” He turned and walked away. She sighed and opened the door, and then he turned around.
“ By the way… My name is Lance.”
